St Agnes Carnival is now in its 53rd successful year giving pleasure to those participating and to those watching by the roadside.
The continuing success of our Carnival has meant that the number of entries has increased together with the number of spectators.
Last year there was a serious accident at a Somerset Carnival, which means that all carnivals are being scrutinised. We must be seen to take all necessary action to protect the public and the participants, or risk being forced to cancel the event.
Our Professional Road Marshalls, the police and several float drivers have expressed their concerns about possible dangers on the current carnival route, which we cannot ignore. Also, gaps in the Procession meant that some floats were not getting back to the Carnival field until 9.15pm. As there are many children in the Carnival we have had to proceed with the prize giving at a reasonable family time, which is before some floats return to the field.
Over the years the Carnival routing and rules have had to change to meet new circumstances. Circumstances now dictate that we must look again at our Carnival.
In view of this we have taken the decision to try something different this year.
It will still start an hour earlier at 5:30 from the Carnival field, and proceed along Vicarage Road to Churchtown, where it will go along Trevaunance Road to the Enys Park Sports Ground.
Trevaunance Road, with pavements either side will give a larger and safer family viewing area to see the Carnival Procession. It is also hoped that the new level route will reduce the gaps. Prize Giving can then take place at a reasonable family friendly time at the Sports Ground.
We hope that all of you who that take part in or watch the Carnival can understand the necessity for us to trial these changes to the route and time, and that we can have another great Carnival.
